All members of the Phuket Hotels Association have jointly committed to eliminate plastic water bottles and drinking straws from rooms by 2019 as part of an effort to ensure a sustainable future for Phuket, said association president Anthony Lark.
The association has also provided information to its hotel members about companies that provide alternatives to plastics for food storage, waste bags and guest amenities.
Lark said the association aims to ensure a sustainable short-term and long-term tourism environment in Phuket by encouraging its member hotels to take action and adopt sustainable, none plastic solutions amenities and services to their guests.
“We’ve tracked the single use plastic in place at our hotels and provided the hotel owners and management with cost effective solutions to switch from plastics to sustainable alternatives. We’ve worked closely with the government and support the efforts of Thai schools and colleges to slowly but surely make changes. We will also be recognizing those hotels that make the most progress,” he added.
Lark said that the growing numbers of tourists on the island actually helps make the alternatives more economically viable. For instance, the change from using plastic water bottles to reusable glass actually saves the hotels money and this has been demonstrated at many of members’ hotels that have already made the switch.
Phuket Hotels Association recently announced a new annual international forum called PHIST (Phuket Hotels for Islands Sustaining Tourism), which will hold its first event on the island in September to support the region's hospitality industry in its fight for a sustainable future.
The PHIST Forum 2018 will take place on September 24th at the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa and is coorganised by C9 Hotelworks and Greenview, respected consultants to the regional hospitality industry. The innovative ecofocused event will bring together some of Southeast Asia’s key tourism and hospitality stakeholders – particularly those operating in island destinations – to explore solutions to the region’s most pressing environmental issues.
“Island tourism in Southeast Asia is at a critical juncture; we simply cannot continue overlooking the impacts,” said Eric Ricaurte, founder and CEO of Greenview in an association media release trumpeting the event.
“Risks are real and sustainability must be the driving force behind future growth. But how do we change and adapt to the challenges we face, then catalyse solutions across the region? Education is the key and PHIST will create a forum for positive action.”
The PHIST program will feature a series of expert panels, themed talks, technical workshops and roundtable discussions covering topics such as sustainable operations, destination development, and overtourism. The event is expecting 500 delegates from around the Asia region. All the sessions will be free to attend.
Working together is essential for the industry’s longterm survival, said Bill Barnett, managing director of C9 Hotelworks.
“Environmental destruction is a crisis without borders and the hospitality industry needs to collaborate, find answers, and come up with a regional action plan,” he said. “We can literally use PHIST to fight for our sustainable survival.”
In line with the organisation’s solutions-oriented approach, the Phuket Hotels Association will use PHIST 2018 as an opportunity to showcase its “People. Planet. Phuket” campaign, which aims to educate local island communities and visitors about the importance of the Three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
The campaign brings together over 70 member hotels in an education initiative targeting Phuket’s schools, designed to promote environmental protection and support. The community-based programme uses specially created anime characters, including “The Phist”, a school teacher-turned-superhero who fights and defeats polluting enemies like plastic straws, plastic bottles and oil waste in the ocean.
PHIST is supported by major tourism organisations, including the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thailand Convention and Events Bureau (TCEB), and the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and AustralianThai Chamber of Commerce (AUSTCHAM). Phuket Governor Norrapat Plodthong will open the event.
Lark added that one of the Phuket Hotels Association’s most important tasks is to create a forum for the hotel members to gain access to information on ways to reduce their use of plastics.
“This is, of course, a global issue and we all decided that we wanted Phuket to take the initiative to address these issues with education and actionable strategies that really make a difference. Every tropical island faces the same issues as Phuket and now is the time to start a serious effort to address this in Southeast Asia,” said Lark.
“When the other destinations see the efforts we make to bring together the community, we hope it will raise awareness throughout the region. The PHIST event has a strong regional message and we have already received a lot of interest from islands throughout the Asean bloc interested in the discussion and working towards real actionable solutions and instilling best sustainable practices.
“And yes, every small step we all take makes a difference for Phuket and benefits all those who visit our beautiful Island,” Lark concluded.

Pattaya Populated but not Over Populated
There is no doubt that Pattaya has so many attractions not just the Pattaya night life of Pattaya beach road and the famous Walking street but Many other attractions that attract visitors either as tourists or long term stayers, So the question is answered quite simply over populated and to busy NO, Pattaya city is none stop practically 24 hours a day, Now with the infrastructure that has been dramatically improved over the last few years with new roadways, Highways, Tunnel and now the proposed high speed rail link, Pattaya city has now regenerated and improved a lot of the Suburbs, so if Pattaya is a bit to hectic and crowded for you to live here then now you can move to some of the much quitter suburbs areas that are now just minutes away by car or Taxi areas such as Naklua & Wongamat Beach the famous Pratamank hill renowned for the quietness with the Buddha Hill being located there and the Thai Royal Family having a residence there very clean and safe Family area, Not to forget East Pattaya growing in popularity with many expats who purchase a house on one of the many villages that have been built for privately owned properties to be purchased or rented on long term stays, other areas that are easily accessible to Pattaya city are ,Mabprachan lake area, Huay Yai, Silver lake, Baan Ampur, Na Jomtien and one of my personal favorites retreats the sleepy Fishing Village of Bangsaray, some of the most scenic beach coastline, picturesque area if the budget is there to buy a beach front Villa, out of all the areas we have discussed Bangsaray is probably the furthest from Pattaya city yet still under 30 minutes’ Drive, Are all of these options available to you in a city such as Bangkok? I do not think so;
This is a easy question is Pattaya Booming: YES: all you have to do is drive around Pattaya City the first thing you will notice is the traffic and the tour busses, Shopping malls existing such as Royal Garden Plaza, Mikes and Central Festival and the new Shopping Mall to open soon Terminal 21, expected cost of the build of Terminal 21 Pattaya is 7.5 billion THB with early 2019 as expected opening date as I understand, so if a company is willing to invest 7.5 billion thb, and the latest high rise condominium luxury top end 5 star condominium to be built The Edge Pattaya which is is under construction by the Sansiri group. The Pattaya property market is relatively stable when you compare with some of the western countries with property prices gradually increasing, when you compare with a lot of western countries this should give you a certain level of confidence in the Pattaya property market, even when there has been a down time in the Pattaya property market the property prices no matter if buying or selling condominiums or buying or selling Houses the actual purchase price has never plummeted, in my experience the worst case scenario has been that the property prices have just stayed the same no increase in house prices or decrease in house prices for a short period of time,
This makes the time for the Pattaya property market shorter to rebound and prices to start to increase.
This is a period of time globally that the property market is just starting to comeback where as the property market in Pattaya is still flying along, with many new projects being released some luxury high end condominiums have just been released in Pattaya and Jomtien, says a lot about the Pattaya property market when you look at the quality being built, the market before was for the smaller budget condominiums for sale now it has changed, not so many of the small budget condominium’s being built but more of the middle to high end condominiums being released and under construction.

This was put on the back burner so to speak as a lot of the powerful and influential people within Thailand made strong opposition to legalizing Gambling, so the idea was put to bed, However the rumors continue to resurface IE Casino built in Pattaya, Bangkok to get fist Casino, Samui to be a tourist gambling mecca ETC ETC possibly some people would start these rumors for self-gain ( do you think that is possible ? )
Yes or no would legalizing gambling in Thailand be a good thing or a can of worms being opened, my personal opinion is that I am sitting on the fence (and staying there).
I hear the arguments for the legalization of gambling now their argument is cut and dried, Casinos in Thailand would generate thousands of potential jobs thus giving economic life into certain areas that lets be honest real require a lift, Tourism industry would be given a boost by attracting a certain type of tourist and not just foreign tourists Thai nationals included,
That at the present time use some of the other South East Asia destinations where gambling is legal and casinos are flourishing, as they say the upper class high spending tourists that like to gamble who now venture to areas such as Singapore & Macau would then be tempted and attracted to the thought of Amazing Thailand being a new destination option.
Money Money Money yes money talks (or the root of evil?) people who are for legalizing gambling always point to the fact that a lot of Money that is leaving Thailand to go to some of the neighboring countries, also the illegal gambling dens being used around Thailand would be squeezed out so by legalizing gambling you will be eradicating another major problem and generating the economy and creating jobs.
Most suggestions and proposals feature some rules restricting gamblers, targeting the “high end well heeled” individuals. One question to arise if only well-heeled people were allowed to gamble, how would that stop the operation of illegal gambling dens found in the country? Currently in Thailand, an illegal lottery system co-exists alongside the state sponsored lottery. It is likely that legalized casinos would have a similar non-effect on illegal dens if the Casinos were to only allow the “High end well heeled “
Could the government stop the outflow of gambling money crossing the borders to other countries? If local gamblers are requested to prove they are people of “means” and then suffer the gross invasions of their privacy or financial solvency, I do not think seriously you could keep gamblers from crossing the border to gamble their money away in another country anonymously with these checks into the status.
For me personally as a person who does not gamble at the casinos with my hard-earned cash I will be sitting on the fence with this debate, looking from both sides of the coin there are benefits for and against Casinos in Thailand.
Exiting news for Pattaya Tourism & real estate with the news that the Thailand government will open bidding for the first phase of a hi-speed rail project linking Bangkok to Pattaya for the real estate investors this will only be good, Under the plan, the first four routes will cover 250 kilometers linking Bangkok to Phitsanulok, Nakhon Ratchasima and Hua Hin as well as to Pattaya. Construction on all the four routes will begin at the same time with the aim of opening the new track network in 2018. Twenty minutes Bangkok Pattaya as an expected travel time commuting to work from Pattaya to Bangkok will be a real option.
Government approval will be necessary for the international bidding process expected to be completed next year. China, Japan, South Korea and France have all expressed strong interest in bidding for the routes. The plan aims to boost the country’s economy by reducing energy costs by 400 billion baht as Thailand focuses more on rail travel at the expense of road transport. At the moment, rail accounts for only two percent of all traffic and roads for 80 percent. The price of oil internationally is expected to double within the next five years with likely big increases in the cost of petrol.
Extracts from Thai news media quoted Pansak Vinyaratn, chief adviser to the prime minister said that hi-speed trains are necessary to ensure solid growth of the country’s economy as Thailand would otherwise lose competitiveness in the long run. Second-phase construction would mean that Bangkok would link by hi-speed rail to Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Rayong and Hat Yai by 2022. The new railway networks will serve both passengers and cargo, including faster transport of agricultural goods which tend to deteriorate if transported long distances by road, roll on effect will mean that a large percentage of traffic will be taken off the roads.
Details of the new routes, including the exact location of stations, have not yet been decided. Pattaya’s tourism & Real estate industry are expected to gain hugely with the arrival of a 20-minute fast train service from Bangkok or Suvarnabhumi to the seaside resorts of Pattaya Jomtien & surrounding districts. A City Hall source told the local Pattaya media Pattaya Today, “The current rail station is far out of the city in east Pattaya, so we are hoping that the railhead for the new hi-speed trains will be nearer the downtown area.” Another suggestion is to build a monorail track to take passengers directly from the hi-speed train to the centers of Pattaya and Jomtien.
The latest rail project will be a huge step forward in enabling Pattaya to triple its receipts from tourism by the end of the decade or soon afterwards. Other infrastructure improvements already agreed to or in the pipeline are a beach reclamation project, more by-pass roads and tunnels, a better waste disposal system,
With the advent of the Asean Economic Community in 2015, a free-trade area of 10 countries in the region, economists say that the hi-speed rail plans will enhance Thailand as the logistics hub of South East Asia with all the basic infrastructure such as inland transport and rail and deep seaports to carry the expected increase in freight across national frontiers. Also scheduled for completion in 2018 is Dawei port in Myanmar, a deep-water facility with major Thai funding, which will speed up the transport of goods between Asean countries and beyond to India.
As they say if you stand still you are actually going backwards this news is a major boast for the Pattaya Tourism real state and business sector that have over the past few years found it hard, a true statement of intent to improve Thailand’s infrastructure, anybody who remembers Bangkok prior to the opening of the BTS (Bangkok Mass Transit System) in 1999will remember what a difference it made to travel around Bangkok, the news regarding the High speed rail links are a bigger game changer for the region.
No doubt there will be some critics for the project but this happens when any major change comes around some people are set in their ways and do not like change, on a personal note I embrace change after living in Thailand for over twenty years Phuket, Koh Samui, Bangkok and where I like to call home Pattaya I have seen many changes and heard may critics of the changes

In my humble opinion defiantly not there have bee some dips but generally 2017 has been a very interesting year in the Pattaya real estate market, but certainly not all doom and gloom as some like to make out.
In my opinion and the opinion of many of my friends and colleagues that work in the real estate market 2017 has been a very interesting year for the real estate market and Pattaya property market, we have seen some ups and downs this year in the market place, one of the biggest impacts in real estate was the Russian speaking buyers which grew at a remarkable rate of speed maybe to quick to be sustainable from 2008 to 2013 then a dramatic reduction in the Russian speaking buyers in the market after 2013. In the last quarter of 2017 we have seen a slight rise in the Russian speaking buyers again.
Russian speaking buyers were taken over by the Chinese speaking buyers, with the idea of buying the budget smaller condos at around 1,800,000thb, the Chinese mind set seems to be to buy cheaper budget condominiums but buy lots of condominiums, the majority of the luxury and middle range properties were bought by Thai, Singaporeans, Europeans and Japanese buyers.
The worldwide recession obviously had a impact on the real estate market in Thailand as it did in the Global scheme of real estate over the last few years, we have seen some developers cancel or postpone projects in 2017, this a good reason to look at the overall picture and say it is not all doom and gloom as there are other developers that have carried on regardless with their new projects with reports of very good sale figures reached from there off plan projects these are obviously reputable developers with vision of the future being a bright one in the Pattaya property market.

The house registration or Tabien Bahn More commonly known as the blue book is official document that is issued at the local municipality or district office to Thai Nationals and None Thai Nationals (Foreigner’s / Farang ), owning a residential property here in Thailand (The Land of SmilesJ) as proof of a person’s permanent legal Address, and voting district for Thai Nationals.
(Q) Does the Tabien Bahn confirm property ownership?
(A) No the Tabien Bahn may or may not have the real name of the official owner of the House or condominium, This document only verifies the house number and details of the persons residing in the specific house or condominium and is not valid for proof of Real estate ownership. Ownership of the house or condominium is verified by the land title deed.
(Q) May the Tabien Bahn be used for mortgage collateral?
(A) No Tabien Bahn may only be used as proof of address only title deeds may be used for collateral.
(Q) How do I change from one Tabien Bahn to register another?
(A) Easiest way to change your Tabien Bahn is to have both changed at the district office which has jurisdiction over the new house or condominium you are moving in to, with the age of technology upon us this can now be done with-in a day as all district offices have on line facilities.
(Q) What is the difference between the house registration book for a condominium and registration book for a house?
(A) The house registration book is the same for a condominium as it is for a house, the application procedure is also the same, the one difference is that it is stated if house or condominium.
(Q) Are the rules and regulations the same all over Thailand?
(A) Yes all provinces and cities have the same Tabien Bahn, Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, Pattaya, Jomtien, Chang Mai, Rayong, Bangasray ETC
(Q) May a minor be registered on the Tabien Bahn?
(A) YES A minor may be registered on the Tabien Bahn so long as a Thai Partner or Thai guardian is registered with the minor.
(Q) May a person own more than one property in Thailand?
(A) Yes A person may own more than one house or condominium in Thailand, but can only have their name on one Tabien Bahn which is there principle residence which they are allowed to have registered.
(Q) Will I have any legal responsibilities’ to full fill?
(A) Yes if you are registered on the Tabien Bahn as the owner you are required to fulfill legal obligation’s such as, when there is a birth at the house or condominium either of the parents or the person who is on the Tabien Bahn must register the birth with-in 15 days. If there is a death in the property this has to be registered at the district office and to the local police department with-in 24 hours. When someone moves-in or moves out of the house or condominium you must inform the local district office with-in 15 days.
If you plan to demolish a house then you have to inform the district office and apply for a demolition permit, a construction permit must be processed before construction of a new house, and after construction with-in 15 days you may apply for a new house number.
(Q) ARE Tabien Bahn issued only in the official owners name?
(A) No you have the right to leave the Tabien Bahn blank or register another person’s name on the Tabien Bahn, in the future however if you decide to sell the house or condominium then you will be liable to pay 3.3% business tax if no name has been registered.
(Q) IF Tabien Bahn IS lost stolen or defaced can I apply for a new one?
(A) YES you may apply for a new Tabien Bahn report the missing Tabien Bahn to the nearest police department and receive a report, at your local district office they will issue a new Tabien Bahn for a minimal fee.
